As I found out, nothing can really prepare you for this – it’s such a devastating time but hope that your family and friends will help you in the coming days and you can take comfort from Syd’s considerable achievements and what he did for your town.

Approachable, humble and genial, this masked the fierce passion for this town and propagating what was/is good about it. A much used phrase, but true to say he was the heartbeat of Newton Aycliffe and we are indeed fortunate to have had him living amongst us. RIP, Syd.
